Slug pellets, ant baits, fly spray and garden insecticides can all poison dogs.
Metaldehyde slug pellets and organophosphate sprays are particularly dangerous.
Metaldehyde (in slug pellets) causes severe tremors, seizures and hyperthermia within 1–3 hours. Organophosphates and carbamates inhibit acetylcholinesterase, producing SLUD signs (Salivation, Lacrimation, Urination, Defecation) and respiratory failure. Pyrethrins/pyrethroids are usually less toxic but can cause tremors at high concentrations.
