Greasy human leftovers — bacon, drippings, fried food, butter — are a leading cause of pancreatitis in dogs.
A sudden high-fat meal can trigger inflammation of the pancreas, which is painful and potentially life-threatening.
High-fat meals stimulate the pancreas to release large amounts of digestive enzymes. In susceptible dogs (especially Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers and overweight dogs) these enzymes begin to digest the pancreas itself, causing acute pancreatitis. Symptoms typically appear 24–72 hours after the fatty meal.

Even one fatty meal can trigger pancreatitis in a sensitive dog. Avoid feeding table scraps, drippings, butter, or fried food.
