Introducing Your Rescue Dog to Existing Pets

Already have a pet at home? Here's how to make introductions smooth, safe, and stress-free for everyone.

The Golden Rule

lightbulb

Go slow. Introductions that feel too fast to you are probably WAY too fast for your animals.

Dog-to-Dog Introduction

Step 1: Neutral Territory Meeting

1

Choose a neutral location — A park or street neither dog considers "theirs"

2

Two handlers required — One person per dog, both on loose leashes

3

Parallel walking — Walk in the same direction, 3-5 meters apart

4

Gradually decrease distance — Over 10-15 minutes

5

Allow a brief sniff — 3 seconds max, then redirect with treats

6

Watch body language — Loose, wiggly = good. Stiff, staring = separate

Step 2: Home Introduction

warning

NEVER leave a new dog unsupervised with your existing pet in the first 2-4 weeks, even if they seem fine together.

Dog-to-Cat Introduction

1

Keep them completely separated for 3-7 days — Different rooms, swap blankets

2

Feed on opposite sides of a closed door — Positive association through scent

3

Baby gate meeting — Visual contact with a barrier. Reward calm behavior

4

Supervised leashed meeting — Dog on leash, cat has escape routes

5

Gradually increase freedom — Only when the dog consistently ignores or is calm around the cat

lightbulb

The cat should always have high escape routes (shelves, cat trees) where the dog cannot reach them.

Most dogs need 2-4 weeks of careful introductions before they can be trusted together unsupervised. Some pairs take months.

My rescue dog is chasing my cat. What should I do?expand_more

Go back to separation. The dog should be on leash around the cat at all times. Reward the dog heavily for calm behavior near the cat. If the predatory drive is very strong, consult a professional trainer.
