Cycasin and methylazoxymethanolSago palm contains cycasin, methylazoxymethanol (MAM) and beta-methylamino-L-alanine. Cycasin is metabolised in the liver into MAM, a potent hepatotoxin that causes massive hepatocellular necrosis. Acute liver failure typically develops within 2–3 days.
