The danger comes from sugar-free or "diet" peanut butters that contain xylitol (also called birch sugar or E967) as a sweetener. Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs even in small amounts. Always read ingredient labels carefully before giving peanut butter to your dog.

Plain peanut butter without xylitol: safe in moderation (1-2 tablespoons for a medium dog). Peanut butter with xylitol: dangerous at any amount (see the xylitol entry for specific doses). High fat content means excessive peanut butter can contribute to obesity and pancreatitis. Look for peanut butter with only one ingredient: peanuts.
