Milk & Dairy

PRECAUȚIE

Most adult dogs are lactose intolerant — milk and dairy commonly cause digestive upset.

Nivel de toxicitate

2/10

De ce este periculos

Dogs lose most of their lactase enzyme after weaning. Cheese, ice cream and milk can therefore cause bloating, gas and diarrhea even though they are not poisonous.

Știința

Lactose

Adult dogs produce very little lactase, the enzyme needed to break down lactose (the sugar in milk). Undigested lactose ferments in the colon, producing gas and drawing water into the bowel, which causes diarrhea. High-fat dairy products (cheese, cream) can additionally trigger pancreatitis.

Doze și praguri

A teaspoon of yoghurt or a sliver of cheese is usually well tolerated. Larger volumes, especially ice cream and cream, frequently cause GI upset.
