Toxicity Level
0/10Why It's Safe
Apple slices are a crunchy, healthy treat. Seeds contain small amounts of cyanide — remove them.
The Science
Apples are a good source of vitamins A and C, plus fiber. The flesh and skin are completely safe. Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which releases small amounts of hydrogen cyanide when crushed. However, a dog would need to chew and eat a very large number of seeds for any toxic effect. As a precaution, simply core the apple before serving.
Serving Guide
Apple flesh and skin: safe in unlimited amounts (though high sugar content means moderation is best). Apple seeds: the cyanide content is extremely low — a dog would need to chew approximately 200+ seeds to reach a concerning dose. Still, core apples before serving to be safe.
