SICURO

Sunflowers are non-toxic and safe around dogs.

Livello di tossicità

0/10

Perché è sicuro

Both the flower and seeds are safe. Seeds can be a choking hazard — serve unsalted and shelled.

science

La scienza

Sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus) are completely non-toxic to dogs. The petals, leaves, and stems are safe. Sunflower seeds are also safe and provide healthy fats (linoleic acid), vitamin E, and selenium. The main risk is that salted or flavored sunflower seeds contain excessive sodium, and the shells can cause GI irritation or minor blockage if consumed in large quantities.

scale

Guida alle porzioni

Unsalted, shelled sunflower seeds: safe as an occasional treat (a pinch for small dogs, a tablespoon for large dogs). Avoid salted or flavored varieties. The whole sunflower plant is safe — dogs can sniff and interact with it freely. Sunflower seed butter (without xylitol) is also safe.
