La scienza

N/A — risk is from xylitol additive

Plain peanut butter (made only from peanuts and possibly salt) is safe and even healthy for dogs — it is a good source of protein, healthy fats, and vitamin E. The danger comes from sugar-free or "diet" peanut butters that contain xylitol (also called birch sugar or E967) as a sweetener. Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs even in small amounts. Always read ingredient labels carefully before giving peanut butter to your dog.

High fat content means excessive peanut butter can contribute to obesity and pancreatitis. Look for peanut butter with only one ingredient: peanuts.
