Nutmeg contains myristicin, a neurotoxin and hallucinogen in dogs.
A dash in baked goods is usually too small to cause problems; whole nutmeg or large amounts in batter are dangerous.
Myristicin inhibits monoamine oxidase, leading to neurotransmitter buildup. In dogs it causes hallucinations, disorientation and tremors, and at high doses can cause seizures and dangerous heart rhythms. Onset is typically 3–6 hours after ingestion and signs can last 24–48 hours.

Severe signs require roughly 1–2 teaspoons (5–10 g) for a medium dog. Single small culinary doses sprinkled in food are unlikely to cause serious illness but are best avoided.
