The Science

Lavender (Lavandula) is non-toxic to dogs in its natural plant form. The dried flowers and leaves are safe if ingested in small amounts. Lavender is sometimes used in calming products for dogs. However, concentrated lavender essential oil is a different matter — it contains linalool and linalyl acetate in high concentrations that can cause GI upset and central nervous system depression if ingested.

Serving Guide

Fresh or dried lavender plant: safe. Lavender essential oil: do not apply to skin or allow ingestion — even small amounts of concentrated essential oil can cause nausea and lethargy. Lavender-scented products designed for dogs (sprays, shampoos) use diluted, safe concentrations.
