Giant hogweed sap causes severe phototoxic burns to skin in sunlight.
Even brushing past the plant can leave sap on skin or fur, leading to painful blisters in sunlight.
The sap contains furanocoumarins (psoralens) which are activated by UV light. Skin contact followed by sun exposure causes phytophotodermatitis: redness, blisters, and pigment changes that can last months. Eyes are particularly vulnerable.

Reactions can occur with very brief contact. Rinse skin and fur immediately if contact is suspected, and keep your dog out of direct sunlight for 48 hours.
